Application deadline : 9.05.2016
A three-year PhD fellowship in Marine Ecology: Fjord Benthos and Aquaculture Effects is available at the Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture, Nord University (Bodø, Norway) from 1 September 2016.

About the PhD fellowship
FBA invites applications from outstanding candidates for a three-year PhD fellowship within the project ‘Impact of aquaculture on the deep basins of fjords’. The PhD fellowship is affiliated with the Strategic Research Group Marine Ecology and the successful candidate will join the Benthos Ecology research unit.
The PhD research project aims to improve the knowledge of benthic communities in deep basins of fjords and the effects of aquaculture on these ecosystems. Most research on ecological effects of aquaculture has focused on the direct vicinity of fish farms, while the adjacent deep basins of fjords were neglected, although they represent depositional environments potentially accumulating organic matter of various sources. Therefore, our project will study the benthic communities of deep basins and the transport of organic matter from fish farms into the fjord basins with potential effects on the functioning of benthic ecosystem. Fatty acid and stable isotope analyses will be used as biomarkers for organic matter sources and uptake in the food web. The project will be carried out in collaboration with Raymond Bannister from the Institute for Marine Research (IMR) in Bergen, where the candidate will do part of the sampling and lab work.
Qualifications and requirements
The candidate should have an MSc degree (or equivalent) in one of the following fields:
  •  (Marine) Biology
  •  (Marine) Ecology
  •  Marine Sciences
  •  or equivalent fields
The grades at the qualifying MS examination needs to be C or better (ECTS scale from A-E) with exam date preferable no later than 15 July 2016.
Profound knowledge and hands-on experience in benthos ecology and statistical analyses is required.
Proficiency in oral and written English is essential and should be documented either by the Norwegian Higher Education Entrance Qualification or internationally recognized certificates, such as TOEFL, IELTS, APIEL or similar. Knowledge of a Scandinavian language will be beneficial for the position.
Experience in field work, including ship based sampling, analyses of marine sediment parameters, biological trait analyses, stable isotope analyses, and fatty acid analyses will be advantageous.
The successful candidate will join the PhD programme in Aquatic Biosciences at Nord University and is expected to complete a doctorate within the three-year project period. The candidate should fulfill the admission requirements of this PhD programme at FBA and participate in the training components stipulated in regulations of the PhD programme. Application for admission to the programme must be submitted within three months after taking up the position. For admission requirements and regulations, see our web page.
